About Lorraine Weideman

Vancouver-based artist Lorraine Weideman has been exhibiting her paintings and photography since the 1980s. She graduated from the graphic design program at Grant MacEwen College (Edmonton) in 1982, and the fine-arts program at Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver) in 1987.

Her fresh and bold paintings generally portray the dynamic female figure, and are often inspired by the past’s fascination with “physical culture.” Lorraine’s experience with many artistic mediums, her interest in creating new life from old disciplines, her passion for antiquity, and an intimate knowledge of her personal genealogy is well reflected in her pieces.

Photography is another aspect of Lorraine’s artistic repertoire.  Her macrocosmic documentation of everyday objects reveals thought provoking whimsy – particularly well-showcased in Joes I Know – a series of thirty honorific portraits of vintage GI Joe action figures from a pristine collection accumulated in the 1960s.

Lorraine has exhibited her work in diverse solo and group shows in Vancouver and across Canada, and has often been featured in the media. She has also produced commissioned works for the film and television industries, and for many historical and cultural projects, for which she has received numerous awards.
